The Campbeltown Cross

The Birth of Campbeltown

The secular ‘merkat’ or market cross marks the birth of Campbeltown and three hundred years of social history.

The mermaid which is used in the logo for the Heritage Centre is depicted right at the top of Campbeltown Cross. The design on the logo – with long hair and scales – is based upon detailed descriptions given in sightings of a mermaid close to Feochaig.

The Campbeltown Cross a medieval cross is located in the centre of Campbeltown in Argyll. The fine medieval carving, with Celtic designs, dates from around 1380. The cross was erected at a church at Kilkivan before being moved to Campbeltown after the reformation.
